Research Title
DermAnta Patch: Acne Patch Made from a Combination of Red Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) Peel Waste and Red Apple (Malus domestica) Peel Waste
Research Abstract
Religious ceremonies in Bali are inseparable from the use of various types of fruit as offerings, including red dragon fruit and red apples. These fruits are used in large quantities and repeatedly, potentially producing fruit peel waste, which has not been optimally utilized and is generally discarded. However, fruit peel waste has great potential to be developed into valuable materials, particularly in the health and natural-based cosmetics sectors. One use of red dragon fruit peel waste and red apple peel waste is as an active ingredient in anti-acne patch preparations. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the potential of red dragon fruit peel and red apple peel as active ingredients in the manufacture of anti-acne patches and (2) to determine the antibacterial activity of red dragon fruit peel and red apple peel extracts. This study was conducted in three locations: at the home of one of the researchers (Peguyangan Kaja), at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (Sudirman Campus), and at the Laboratory Unit of the Bintang Persada Institute of Technology and Health (ITEKES). This study used an experimental method. This research was conducted through three stages, namely the extract preparation stage, the patch base preparation stage, and the patch preparation stage. Based on the test results, the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) Based on literature studies and phytochemical screening results, it is known that red dragon fruit peel and red apple peel have the potential to be used as active ingredients in anti-acne patch preparations. In addition, this is reinforced by the measured pH results of 4.88 which corresponds to the pH of facial skin. (2) Red dragon fruit peel extract at a concentration of 5% produces an inhibition zone of 12.25 mm, while red apple peel extract at the same concentration produces an inhibition zone of 11.30 mm. Thus, both extracts have antibacterial activity against acne-causing bacteria.
