Research Title

POLLUTANT BARRICADE SYSTEM (GWP)

Research Abstract

The Pollutant Barricade System (GWP) is a rubbish trap made by recycled plastic bottles to minimize water pollution. This rubbish trap consists of a single layer of floating bottles and two pairs of valves at the opposite sides to trap the rubbish. A similar project has been done by other companies and the obvious differences are the design and the materials used for the project. Commonly the materials that others used for their project were PVC, concrete and aluminium which need high cost. As for GWP, the lowest cost is based on 3R's concept (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle). The materials that GWP use is polyethylene terephthalate (PET1) plastic bottles that are firm, light and environmentally friendly. The objectives of GWP are to help minimize the water pollution, to save aquatic lives and to foster 3R's culture among community. The GWP will be launched on the river and the rubbish will be collected manually. Field implementation conducted between 2021 and 2025 demonstrated strong and consistent performance outcomes. There were two types of tests used during the project which is pH test and BOD test to determine the water quality. The result shows that, BOD Test was conducted once a month to record the time taken for methylene blue solution to decolorize to determine the water quality. After launching GWP in the river, the time taken for methylene blue solution to decolorize is increased from 3 hours to 7.8 hours. It shows that the water quality is improved. pH Test was conducted to determine the water quality. The data shows that by launching GWP, the pH test had increased from 2.1 to 7.2 and become neutral. That means the water quality is improved. The implementation of GWP gives a lot of benefits to the school community and social community at large. The design of GWP helps to prevent rubbish from flowing back to the sea. Studies and investigations will be continued to enhance GWP. The invention will be upgraded to obtain the best result and increase efficiency. The GWP system is inspired by the functional mechanism of the human heart valve, which allows fluid to flow in one direction while preventing backflow. By applying this concept, the system enables floating waste to enter the trap while effectively blocking it from escaping, ensuring continuous rubbish interception even during changing tidal conditions. Pollutant Barricade System is effectively to eliminate rubbish, decrease in water pollution level and trap rubbish from the sea and river during low and high tides.
