Research Title
Smart Trash Sorter
Research Abstract
The primary objective of this research is to introduce an innovation that automates trash sorting at the point of disposal. This research is especially useful for homes and for busy places like offices and commercial businesses, where large volumes of waste are generated. We identified the problem of inefficiency and cost associated with manual trash sorting. This occurs when individuals incorrectly dispose of general trash into recycling bins. By automating the trash sorting process, the research aims to: - Enhance Ease of Use and eliminate the guesswork and effort for the user, who no longer needs to manually sort their trash. - Provide a Cheaper Alternative by drastically reducing the high downstream costs associated with manual sorting and contamination by ensuring only properly sorted materials enter the recycling stream. The main technologies used are (1) AI-powered Camera within the trash bin, (2) Controller Board and (3) Mechanical Sorting Arms. The camera rapidly identifies various recyclable items such as plastics and paper, efficiently separating them from ordinary trash.
